Introduction: Make your expressions take form with the use of mixed media, colours and patterns that tell your story.
Day 1.
Introduction- Expressive abstract drawing by using pen, pencil, pastels, and charcoal stick. (Bring a sketchbook and drawing media to class)
Day 2.
Lecture- Colour theory, colour wheel, colour schemes
Demonstration- The palette, putting colour theory to practise by mixing with other media Exercise- Begin several compositions by applying colour theory and making patterns (Bring painting material to the second class)
Day 3-4
Lecture- Understand depth in painting, method of articulating space, on the 2D surface and shape relationship
Demonstration- Abstract composition, developing a composition by working in layers, value pattern, shape relationship, balance and colour application
Exercise- Continue several paintings by focusing on shape, colour, principles and aesthetic adaptation (Bring painting material to the second class)
Day 5.
Lecture- Modern art, slide-assisted presentation.
Discussion- Spotlight on contemporary art
Exercise- Continue at least one painting by applying a concept or imagery art
Day 6-9
Discussion- Abstracting from life, focus on figurative, the dual function of paint to represent and abstract from life
Demonstration- Abstract figurative paintings, developing drawings based on references (photos, prints, etc.) as a source, transferring drawing to surface sheet, beginning and working through painting using a combination of abstract sensibilities
Exercise- Continue at least one painting by adding forms using a photographic reference (Bring several photographic references)
Day 10
Demonstration- Subtraction, reducing complexity in composition using acrylics, focus on subtraction, simplification, positive and negative shapes, texture, pushing and pulling, and edge control
Exercise- Develop a painting in progress by applying the method of subtraction (Bring several paintings in progress - overworked paintings)
Day 11-12
Mixed media, combining acrylic paint with other dry media masking, stencil, collage Exercise- Develop a painting in progress by incorporating mixed media into the composition (Bring mixed media such as stencils, collage, textured paper, etc.)
Day 13
Discussion- Concept development, what is your painting saying, developing an art-making process based on a personal concept
Exercise- Continue work with paintings/work in progress
Day 14
Open paintings, continue work in progress
Day 15
Group/Closing discussion
